Chris Davenport 150th Game - Round 1 Match Report
Senior Teams
The Port Boys started the season in style with an impressive 3 wins against Rockingham Mandurah.
1st Grade
A Grade skipper Chris Davenport celebrated his 150th A Grade game with a comfortable victory. Bowling first, opening bowlers Sam Greer (3/31) and Jacob Headland (3/22) both struck early to leave Rocky 3 down early. The 4th wicket partnership was broken by Kaiden Cookson (1/14) and fellow spinner Darin Jayaprakash (2/23) continued to chip away at Rocky. The Port wrapped up in the innings in only 35 overs, bowling Rocky out for 139. In reply, the early loss of Kyle Walsh didn’t cause too many nerves in the camp as milestone man Davenport joined Dokey Hoogenboezem and the pair took the Port close to the target. Davenport was dismissed for 38 but Hoogenboezem showed his class as he finished the innings 85 not out, wrapping up the game with 3 big sixes. The Port ran out comfortable winners by 7 wickets.
2nd Grade
The 2nd Grade fell to an agonising defeat at Rocky. The Port batted first and were grateful to young opener Jack Anderson who showed patience in compiling 68. Unfortunately the Port were unable to put together a significant partnership however a few cameos helped them finish their innings on 8/197, a total they were confident in defending. An early wicket for the excellent Brandon Walsh (4/26) gave the Port some early momentum but Rocky fought back as the runs began to build. The introduction of spin help wrestle control back with Elijah Turriff-Smith (2/23) being the pick of the slow bowlers. A late rally from Rocky left them needing 9 to win from the final over and, whilst Ryan Fox kept his cool on field, unfortunately the Port fell to an over rate penalty after the game to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
3rd Grade
The 3rd Grade started the season with an impressive win in a low scoring game. It was another young opener, Dylan Ratter, who set the standard early for the 3s, looking very confident in his innings of 40. Similar to the 2s game, the 3s couldn’t find that big partnership to put a very competitive score on the board. However contributions throughout the team were key to the Port getting a total, with 7 of the 8 Freo batsmen making double figures, as Freo finished on 6/168. In reply, The Port were able to chip away with constant wickets and, similar to the batting, it came down to contributions across the board to get over the line. Spinners Nick and Charlie Campo piled the pressure on as both finished with 2 wickets apiece, as did seamer Ben Moore playing his game for the club after a 2 year break. Rocky were eventually bowled out for 123 giving The Port an impressive 45 run win.
4th Grade
The 4th grade batsmen hit the ground running as they produced a strong display at Rocky. Openers Benoit Gaffney (53) and Bernie Hoogenboezem (75) put on 137 for the first wicket and built an excellent platform for the rest of the innings. Some positive hitting from Ethan Beatty (43) helped the Port to an impressive final score of 4/241. Rocky started the innings well before skipper Alex Cecchi (2/32) struck twice in quick succession to help get the Port on track. He was supported by seamers Ethan McDowell (2/38) and Sam Harding (2/39) as Freo were able to take regular wickets and control the run rate. Rocky couldn’t get going at the end of the innings and finished on 8/201, giving The Port an impressive 40 run win to start the season.
